Even before my cancer diagnosis, I paid attention to the ingredients in products I used around my family. Over the years, one simple swap I’ve continued to make is homemade bug spray.

I don’t believe we can eliminate every exposure, but I do believe small changes can add up over time. This easy recipe uses a handful of ingredients, smells great, and has become a staple for walks, gardening, evenings on the patio, and family outdoor activities.

Why Make Your Own Homemade Bug Spray?

Homemade bug spray allows you to:

  • Choose your own ingredients
  • Avoid unnecessary additives
  • Customize the scent
  • Save money
  • Make only what you need

It’s become a staple for walks, gardening, evenings on the patio, and family outdoor activities.

Homemade Bug Spray Ingredients

You’ll Need:

  • 3.5 oz witch hazel (You can substitute 1 oz. Vodka and 3 oz. Water)
  • 30 drops citronella essential oil
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 20 drops tea tree essential oil
  • 20 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
  • 20 drops cedarwood essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 20 drops Purification® essential oil (Optional- Purification is a blend of citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, tea tree, lavender, and myrtle essential oils. I personally use it because I enjoy the scent, but you can omit it or substitute additional citronella, lavender, or lemongrass.)

Want to simplify this recipe? Many of these oils are included in my favorite essential oil starter bundle, making it easy to get more of the oils that you need in one purchase.👉 Shop the Essential Oil Bundle Here.

  • Add all essential oils.
  • Secure the lid and shake well.
  • Shake before each use.

Can You Customize the Recipe?

Absolutely.

One of my favorite things about homemade bug spray is that it’s flexible.

Some people prefer:

  • More citronella
  • More lavender
  • Less peppermint
  • Different combinations of outdoor-friendly essential oils

Feel free to experiment and find what works best for your family.

A Few Safety Notes

Essential oils are highly concentrated.

Always:

  • Dilute properly
  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • Test on a small area of skin first
  • Consult your healthcare provider if pregnant, nursing, or using on young children

My Simple Philosophy

I don’t believe healthy living has to be overwhelming.

Small changes can add up over time.

For our family, homemade bug spray is one of those simple swaps that helps us spend more time outside while feeling good about the products we’re using.
